The Small Details: Lily's second birthday

בשבוע שעבר חגגנו ללילי יום הולדת שנתיים.
הזמן טס כל כך מהר, ובלי ששמתי לב התינוקת המתוקה שלי גדלה והפכה לבן אדם קטן.
היא כבר מקשקשת בלי סוף, סקרנית ושואלת המון שאלות. אוהבת לצחוק ולהצחיק, לעשות שטויות ולשיר שירים. אוהבת לצייר, לרקוד, ללכת לים וללטף כלבים חמודים.

Last week we celebrated Lily's second birthday.

My, how time flies. I hadn't even noticed that my sweet little baby girl had turned into a little person - she yammers on and on and curiously asks a whole lot of questions, she loves to laugh, sing and be silly, she paints, dances, loves going to the beach and petting cute puppies.

בשבת שעברה הזמנו אלינו את המשפחה המורחבת לבראנץ׳ מושקע (את התמונה למטה צילמתי לפני שרוב האוכל הוגש לשולחן). היו סלטים טעימים, ברוסקטות, מאפים וגם אמפנדס ארגנטינאיים שהכין אבא שלי, על פי המתכון המקורי שירש מסבתא שלי.

Last Saturday we had our entire family over for a sumptuous brunch (don't be fooled by the picture, it was taken just before most of the food was served). there were yummy salads, bruschetta, pastries and unbelievably delicious Argentinian enchiladas my dad prepared, following my grandma's original recipe.

לילי קיבלה הרבה מתנות יפות (על שתיים יפות במיוחד, שנעשו בהרבה יצירתיות ואהבה, אכתוב בפוסט הבא) אבל אחד הדברים שהכי שימחו אותה היתה העוגה שהכנתי עבורה.

Lilly got lots of lovely presents (two special ones, made with a lot of love and creativity, will be featured in my next post) but what she was happiest about was the cake I had made especially for her.

במהלך השבועות שלפני יום ההולדת ניסיתי לחשוב על רעיון שישמח אותה ובאותה המידה - שגם אהנה לבצע אותו. למזלי היא עדיין לא בעניין של מותגים ודמויות למיניהם כך שיכולתי ללכת על כל נושא שרציתי. לבסוף בחרתי להכין עוגה שהיא בעצם מסיבת יום הולדת קטנה בפני עצמה.

During the weeks building up to Lily's birthday I found myself racking my brain trying to think of a cake concept that will make her happy and will also be fun for me to make. Luckily she still isn't into branded characters & cartoons, so I could pick whatever theme I wanted. I ended up making a cake that was actually a little birthday party in itself.

את עוגת השוקולד שאפיתי ציפיתי בבצק סוכר. מסביב קישטתי אותה בדגלונים - משולשים שחתכתי בסכין והצמדתי זה לזה.

I baked a chocolate cake and quickly covered it in sugar paste icing, decorating it with small flags made of triangles I cut with a knife and placing them alongside each other.

האורחים במסיבה היו חיות פלסטיק (קנויות) שקיבלו כובעים מנייר. על השולחן הקטן הוגשו להן עוגות קטנות מבצק סוכר או פרליני שוקולד (שהיו לי בבית והפכו למאוד שימושיים) מעוטרות בסוכריות קישוט. הם הביאו מתנות עשויות מפרלינים ומקרון ארוזים בסרט בצק סוכר ובלונים, שפיסלתי גם מהבצק. כדי לתת להם מראה מבריק, הברשתי אותם במים, מה שמייצר ציפוי סירופי לבצק.

The guests at this particular mini-party were plastic animals (store bought), each with its own tiny paper party hat. Their small table included mini sugar paste cakes and chocolate pralines, that I actually had just lying around in my kitchen, decorated with tiny candy. The animals brought little gifts made of pralines and macaroons tied up in a sugar paste bow and balloons, which I also made of sugar paste. To give them a glossy finish, I brushed them with a little water, creating a syrupy glaze.
