No place like home

כבר כתבתי כמה וכמה פעמים בבלוג על עיצוב החנויות שלי, אבל הפעם החלטתי לתת לכם הצצה לעוד מקום אחד, שאני אוהבת לא פחות - הבית שלי.

I've already written several times before about the design of my shops, but this time I decided to let you take a peek at another place which I love - my home.

הבית בו אנחנו גרים, הוא בעצם דירה משופצת בבניין לא חדש במיוחד, ברחוב שקט ומלא ירוק בשכונת לב תל אביב. כשבעל הבית שיפץ במקור את הדירה, הוא הפגין הרבה טעם טוב ונכונות להשקיע, ולנו נשאר רק להינות מרצפת הפרקט היפה, החלונות הגדולים וחלק מהריהוט שנשאר בדירה - ולתת את הטאץ' האישי שלנו.

We live in a renovated apartment in a not-so-new building, on a quiet and tree filled street in the heart of Tel Aviv. When the owner originally renovated the place, he was willing to invest in the apartment and used his good taste, so we were left to enjoy the wooden floors, the big windows and to put our personal touch into the design of the place.

במסדרון הכניסה לבית יצרנו קיר תמונות המשלב בתוכו גם מראה גדולה. זה איפשר לנו לשלב יחד ולהציג תמונות שונות שלא מצאנו להן מקומות נפרדים.

In the entrance hall we created a photo wall, which combines a big mirror. This enabled us to hang different pictures and items we didn't really find room for.

המקום האהוב עלי בבית הוא המרפסת הסגורה. החלונות הגדולים משקיפים לצמרות העצים ומכניסים לדירה אור נעים. מדפי הספרים יוצרים אווירה ביתית וחמימה.

My favorite place in the apartment is the sun room, that used to be a balcony. The big windows overlook the treetops and bring in light. The bookshelves create a homey feeling.

את הכסאות המקסימים, בעיצוב אימס, קיבלתי במתנה (כמו גם את כסא הנדנדה הכחול המופיע בתמונה הראשונה) ואחרי שבמשך חודשים חיפשתי להם שולחן מתאים, מצאתי אחד שהתאים בול - ליד הפח ברחוב. כמובן שהוא לא היה במצב כזה כשמצאתי אותו. אבל בזכות אימי המוכשרת, שנהנית לשפץ רהיטים בזמנה הפנוי, הוא קיבל טיפול אוהב וחיים חדשים אצלנו, כחלק מפינת האוכל הקטנה.

I received these Eames chairs as a gift for my last birthday. I was looking for a matching table for them for months until I found just the right one - on the street next to the dumpster. Thanks to my talented mom, who likes to restore and paint furniture in her spare time, it received a new life as part of our small dining area.

באופן כללי אפשר לומר שהרהיטים והחפצים בבית שלי מורכבים משלוש קבוצות עיקריות:

-חפצים שאספתי בטיולים בעולם

-חפצים שאספתי מהרחוב או בשוק הפשפשים

-חפצים שאספתי באיקאה

כן, אני ממש לא חושבת שאיקאה זו מילה גסה ולדעתי יש להם רהיטים נהדרים (וזולים ובעיקר מסתדרים עם הקושי שלי בדחיית סיפוקים). אם יודעים לשלב אותם נכון עם חפצים ופריטים מיוחדים ושונים, לא צריך להיות שום קושי ליצור בית מיוחד עם סגנון אישי.

 Generally, the items in my house can be devided into 3 main groups:

- Things I collected during trips to other countries

-Things I collected on the street or at the Flea market

- Things I collected in Ikea.

Yes, I don't think Ikea is a bad word and in my opinion they have great furniture (in great prices, plus they fit in with my need for instant satisfaction). If you combine them wisely with other items which are more unique and original, you should have no problem creating a fantastic home which has your personal touch.

את ארונית התרופות המקסימה הזו קניתי בגרושים בחנות יד שניה ואמא שלי כמובן צבעה ושפצה. בתוך הארונית מציץ לו סט בקבוקוני תמרוקים של איקאה, אחד הפריטים היפים ביותר שהם הוציאו בשנים האחרונות. אמרתי לכם שזה עובד טוב ביחד!

This medicine cabinet came from a thrift shop and was painted by my mom.  On the bottom shelf you can see a glass bottle set from ikea, one of their best pieces in the past years. I told you it works!

את השעון הזה קניתי בשוק הפשפשים (ונחשו מי צבע)? במקום המטוטלת שמתי לו נייר צבעוני כרקע בתוך התא הפנימי ושילבתי עץ פלסטיק שקניתי באטסי.

I bought this clock in the flea market (and guess who painted it). In the inner compartment I put patterned paper with a plastic tree I bought on Etsy.

גם על צביעת שולחן מכונת התפירה (משוק הפשפשים) אמונה אמא שלי. הידיות מהחנות האהובה עלי Anthropology.

My mother is also responsible for painting this sewing table, originally from the flea market.

מעל השולחן תלויה מגירה של סדר דפוס (שוק הפשפשים) שקישטתי בניירות צבעוניים מהאוסף שלי. את הצבי הקטן הביא בן הזוג שלי מיפן.

Over the table we hang a printer's old drawer which I decorated with patterned paper from my collection. My fiancé brought the small deer from Japan.

את העפרונות הצבעוניים קניתי לפני שנים בארגנטינה, ולאחרונה סוף סוף נמצאה להן הקופסא המתאימה.

I bought these colored pencils in Argentina a few years ago, and just recently found the perfect box for them.

הקומקום הגיע מחיסול של חנות יד שניה והכוסות - משוק הפשפשים.

The teapot came from a thrift shop and the enamel mugs - from the flea market.

 ואלה - סתם היו יפים מכדי להשאיר אותם ביפן, אז קניתי. (אתם לא רוצים לדעת כמה שקלה המזוודה שלי בדרך חזרה).

And these ceramics - were just too pretty to leave them in Japan, so I bought them. You don't want to know how much my suitcase weighed on the flight back...

גם בבית שלי, כמו בחנויות, מסתובבות כמה וכמה ציפורים ואם שמתם לב לתמונות אולי גם זיהיתם כמה צבאים (אחד מסתתר גם בתמונה הבאה).

Since I love birds, I have some of them in my apartment, as well as in my shops. If you noticed - I also like deer. One is even hiding in the next photo.

באופן כללי, אפשר לומר שהבית שלי הוא מקום מאוד נעים שלפעמים גורם לי להצטער על כך שאני כבר לא עובדת מהבית...

All in all you can say my home is a great place to be in and I like it so much sometimes I regret not working from home anymore...

Japanese Dream - A journey to Japan and a new collection

בחורף האחרון, ארזתי את המזוודות, עליתי על מטוס וטסתי רחוק, כמעט הכי רחוק שאפשר, ליפן.
יפן תמיד היתה אחד המקומות שחלמתי לבקר בהם. האסטטיקה היפנית ריתקה אותי תמיד ופשוט ידעתי שיום אחד אני חייבת להגיע אליה. העובדה שבן הזוג שלי נמצא ביפן לעתים תכופות לענייני עבודה הפכה את הנסיעה לאטרקטיבית במיוחד. כך היינו שם שנינו, בימים הוא עבד ואני עליתי מידי בוקר על הרכבת לעבר יעד אחר ויצאתי לגלות את יפן.
רוב הזמן הנוף מחלון הרכבת היה לבן ומושלג, מה שהפך את החוויה לקסומה עוד יותר.

Last winter I packed my bags and took a plane and flew far away, almost as far as possible, to Japan.Japan has always been one of the places I've wanted to visit. I've always been fascinated by Japanese aesthetics and I just knew that one day I have to visit. The fact that my partner often goes to Japan for business trips made this journey even more attractive. There we were the 2 of us, he worked during the days and I boarded the train every morning, heading to a different destination, off to discover Japan. Most of the time the view from the train window was snowy white, which helped to create an even more magical experience.

כך נגלתה אלי יפן, גדולה, מרהיבה ומלאת ניגודים.
הניגוד המשמעותי ביותר ביפן הוא אולי הניגוד בין הקלאסי לעכשווי. מצד אחד, המסורת ביפן תופסת מקום חשוב ביותר. התרבות היפנית העתיקה עדיין נמצאת בכל מקום והיא מרגשת ומרשימה. מצד שני, אין בעולם עם שמתרגש יותר מטכנולוגיה, חידושים וכל מה שקשור בתרבות המערב כמו היפנים.

And so Japan revealed itself to me - large, bewildering and full of contrasts.
The most dramatic contrast in Japan is probably the one between classical and modern. On one hand, Japanese tradition plays a very important role. Old Japanese culture is still existent in every place and it is exciting and impressive. On the other hand, no other nation is more fascinated by technology, new inventions and anything related with Western culture, than the Japanese people.

היפנים הם הכי מנומסים שיש - בכל מקום הם נעמדים בתור מסודר, בלי רעש ובלי דחיפות. בדרגנועים כולם מתיישרים לימין כדי לאפשר לאחרים לעבור (הצדדים משתנים בחלק מהערים, כך שצריך להתעדכן כדי לא להתפרש כגסי רוח) ואחת המילים שבהן משתמשים בתדירות הגבוהה ביותר, במגוון משמעויות והקשרים שונים, היא סליחה. מעבר לכך, יפן נקיה באופן יוצא דופן. לא נתקלתי ברחוב בפיסת אשפה אחת, וזאת למרות (או בגלל) שבכלל אין שם פחים. יחד עם זאת, הרחובות רחוקים מלהיות משעממים ומלאים בפרטים קטנים שתופסים את העין - החל ממכסי ביוב מעוטרים ועד אמנות רחוב. 

The Japanese are the most polite people – always standing in a straight line, no pushing or noise making. In the escalators everyone sticksto the right, allowing others to pass them (the sides vary in some of the cities, so you need to be updated so as not to be considered rude) and one of the words that Japanese use most often, in different connections and meanings, is "excuse me" or "sorry". On top of that, Japan is extremely clean. I couldn't find even one piece of trash in the street, despite (or maybe because of) the fact that garbage cans just do not exist. Nonetheless, the streets are far from being boring and they are packed with small details that catch the eye, from decorated sewage lids to street art. 

זה גם מה שאהבתי הכי אצל היפנים - המקום שאותו תופסת האסטטיקה בתרבות ובאורח החיים שלהם. היפנים פשוט חייבים שהכל יהיה יפה, וזה כבר מספיק בשבילי בכדי לאהוב אותם. העניין הזה בולט במיוחד באוכל ובאופן שבו הוא מוגש. כלים קטנים ויפים, כל חלק מהארוחה מוגש בכלי משלו, ובעיצוב מיוחד. לאמהות יש אפילו ערכות מיוחדות לקישוט האוכל של הילדים לבית הספר.

This is what I liked most about the Japanese –the important role that aesthetics plays in their culture and daily lives. Japanese just need for everything to be pretty, and that's enough of a reason for me to love them for it. This neatness mostly stands out in their food and in the way it's served – beautiful small dishes, every portion of the meal is served in a separate uniquely designed dish. Mothers even buy special kits for decorating the food they send in their kids' lunchbox.

 אבל מעבר ליפה, היפנים אוהבים "חמוד" או כמו שקוראים לזה ביפנית: "קוואי". היפנים פשוט מטורפים על כל דבר שהוא חמוד, ילדותי ותמים - חיות פרווה עם עיניים גדולות, כלבים קטנים וחמודים ועוד ועוד. הם כל כך רוצים שהכל יהיה חמוד, כך שהם מאנישים כל מה שניתן ומוסיפים פרצופים לשקיות הבמבה המקומית ולדברים משונים כמו סמרטוטי רצפה ומברשות ניקוי או מבלים בבית קפה שכולו מלא בדובוני פרווה מכל הגדלים והמינים.

But even more than pretty, Japanese like it "cute", or as they call it - "Kawaii". Japanese are just crazy for anything that's cute, childish or naïve – stuffed animals with big eyes, cute small-size dogs and more. In their strive to make everything look cute, they humanize anything possible and add faces to the local snack packages or to strange things such as cleaning brushes and rags, or they hang out in coffee shops packed with fuzzy teddy bears of all shapes and sizes. 

אחד הדברים הבולטים ביותר אצל היפנים הוא שאין עבורם שום דבר שהוא מוזר מידי או שונה מידי. משקפי שמש לכלב? שגרתי לגמרי (שלא לדבר על ביגוד לכלבים, שהוא בכלל בסטנדרט). בית קפה מלא בחתולים? יש רבים כאלה בעיר.

One of the things you will notice about the Japanese is that they never consider anything as too strange or different. Sunglasses for a dog? Totally common (not to speak about dog's apparel, which is totally standard). A coffee shop full of cats? There are many of those around.

לסיכום, הטיול ביפן היה כל כך עשיר בחוויות חדשות ושונות, עד כדי כך שאני מרגישה שרק בדיעבד הצלחתי להפנים ולהבין את כל מה שחוויתי שם. למזלי, חזרתי בדיוק כדי לעצב את קולקציית התכשיטים החדשה ולא היה כל ספק שהיא תעוצב בהשראה יפנית.

In summary, my trip to Japan was so rich with new and different experiences, that only now I feel that I've managed to assimilate everything I experienced there. Lucky me, I came back just in time to design my new jewelry collection, and there was no doubt that the design inspiration would be Japanese.

Final Projects

עברו ארבע שנים מאז סיימתי את לימודי העיצוב התעשייתי בחולון, אבל אני עדיין זוכרת את הרגע שלפני הגשת פרוייקט הגמר שלי כאילו הוא היה אתמול. (על הפרוייקט כבר סיפרתי לכם בקצרה כאן).

את רמת ההתרגשות שהרגשתי באותו רגע אין דרך לתאר. הרגשתי כאילו אין לי אוויר. כאילו עוד שניה הרגליים שלי יבגדו בי ואני אפול. או שאפתח את הפה לדבר ולא יצא קול. אבל לא נפלתי, והצלחתי לדבר ואחרי כרבע שעה הכל היה מאחורי. לא רק הפרוייקט, שהתפרס על פני חצי שנה, אלא ארבע שנות לימודים שבמהלכם ישנתי מעט מידי וקיבלתי ביקורת בתדירות גבוהה מידי. אבל היו אלה גם ארבע שנים מדהימות שהפכו אותי למעצבת שאני היום. מידי שנה אני מקפידה לחזור ולבקר בתערוכת הבוגרים של המכון הטכנולוגי בחולון,  כדי להתפעל מהיצירתיות, לקנא קצת בבוגרים על החוויה שהם עוד חלק ממנה וגם קצת כדי לשמוח שכל הסיפור הזה כבר מאחורי.השנה, היתה לי סיבה מיוחדת להגיע, שכן ליאור, אחת העובדות שאולי לחלקכן כבר יצא לפגוש באחת החנויות שלי, היתה בין הבוגרים.בחרתי להציג לכם חוץ מהפרוייקט של ליאור, עוד שני פרוייקטים שאהבתי במיוחד:

It's been 4 years since I graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from the Holon Institute of Technology (HIT), but I still clearly remember the moment before I presented my final project as if it was just yesterday ( I've told you shortly about my project before here).I can't even begin to describe the level of anxiety I was experiencing at that moment. I felt breathless. As if my legs will fail me any second and I will collapse. Or I will open my mouth to speak and no voice would come out. But nevertheless, I did not fall and I managed to speak clearly and after 15 minutes it was all over. Not only the project, which lasted over 6 months, but 4 years of studies in which I slept too little and was given feedback and criticism too often.  But at the same time these were 4 amazing years, which turned me into the designer that I am today. I make it a point to pay a yearly visit to the final HIT graduates' exhibition, to get inspiration from their creativity, to envy the graduates who are still part of this experience and also to feel grateful that all this is behind me. This year I had a special reason to visit, as Lior, one of my sales associates, was amongst the graduates. I have chosen to introduce Lior's project, as well as 2 other projects that got my attention. 

  Robo Workshop ליאור חרמוני

ליאור עיצבה ערכת משחק לילדים בגילאי 7 ומעלה המפתחת את הדמיון, מעודדת יצירה ולצד אלו מחנכת למחזור וקיימות. הערכה היא למעשה סדנא ובה כל הכלים להם הילד זקוק בכדי לתכנן, ליצור ולהרכיב בובות רובוטים מנייר שאותו הוא ממחזר בעצמו. בערכה צנצנת דבק ושייקר ליצירת עיסת נייר, 3 תבניות ליציקת חלקי גוף ומחברים המאפשרים להרכיב מהחלקים מגוון רחב של דמויות רובוטיות. אפילו שאני כבר לא מוגדרת כקהל היעד של הערכה הזו, הייתי בכיף מוכנה להעביר כמה שעות טובות בעזרתה.

Lior Hermoni- Robo Workshop

Lior designed a game kit for kids ages 7 & up, which helps develop imagination, enhances creativity and at the same time educates towards recycling and sustainability. The kit is actually a workshop with tools which kids uses to plan, create and assemble robot doll figures made of paper that they have recycled themselves. The tool includes a glue jar and shaker for making paper mache, 3 mold trays to create body parts and connectors which allow assembly of a wide array of robotic creatures. Even though I am no longer considered the target audience for this kit, I would gladly spend a few hours playing with it.

                

חן ביקובסקי - pop up lighting

את הפרוייקט המקסים של חן כל כך אהבתי שלרגע חשבתי שאף אחד לא ישים לב אם אני אאמץ לעצמי את אחת המנורות ממנו...זוכרים את ספרי הפופ אפ? אותם ספרים שבהם מושכים לשונית והנייר הופך לאובייקטים תלת מימדיים? חן עיצבה סדרת מנורות לילה בהשראת הספרים האלה. היא מספרת: "בפרוייקט זה מטרתי היתה להחזיר את ההתרגשות, ההפתעה והתמימות של עולם הפופ אפ לחיי היומיום שלנו".המנורות שעיצבה הן מנורות לילה והן מופעלות על ידי משיכה או הזזה של לשונית אשר גם גורמת לתזוזה ולהדלקת האור. הצורות שנוצרות ע"י האור משלימות את האובייקטים, כמו למשל קרני האייל או זנב הטווס בצורה כל כך מרגשת, שנדמה לך לרגע כאילו זכית לראות קסם.גופי התאורה עשויים משטחי פלסטיק וההשראה הצורנית נלקחה מעולם האוריגאמי.

Chen Bikovski - Pop Up lighting

I loved this project so much, until for a moment I thought that maybe no one would notice if I took one of these light fixtures for myself. Remember the pop-up books? The ones where you pull a tab and the paper becomes a 3-D object? Chen designed a series of night lamps inspired by these books. She explains: "In this project my aim was to bring back the excitement, the surprise and the naivety of the pop-up world into our daily lives". Chen designed a few night lights which are operated by pulling or shifting a tab, which creates movement that turns the light on. The figures created by the light complement the objects, such as a deer's antlers or a peacock's tail of feathers. This is so bewildering that you feel as if for a moment you have seen magic.

The light fixtures are made of plastic surfaces and the formative inspiration was taken from the origami world.

אופיר זנדני ואוהד חייא - גוף חימום מודולארי בהשראת מדורה

מי מאיתנו לא נהנה לשבת ולהתחמם ליד מדורה. גוף החימום שעיצבו אופיר ואוהד מאפשר לעשות את זה בתוך הסביבה הביתית. הוא מורכב מארבעה עמודי עץ אגוז ומעטפת פורצלן, שגם מעבירה חום וגם אור, כך שנוצרת אשליה של גחלים להטות. בעיני, הפרוייקט הזה מצליח לשלב בין פונקציונליות לאסטטיקה ברמה גבוהה ביותר וליצור באמצעות מוצר חדש חוויה שהיא לחלוטין נוסטלגית עבור רובנו. רק את תפוחי האדמה כנראה שתצטרכו לאפות בתנור...

Ofir Zandani and Ohad Chiya - Modular heating device inspired by a bonfire

Who doesn't enjoy warming up by the fire? The heating device that Ofir and Ohad designed allows you to do so, in the setting of your home. It's made of 4 wooden logs with a porcelain coating, which passes heat and light, creating an illusion of steaming coals. I felt that this project highly succeeds to combine functionality with aesthetics and to create a truly nostalgic experience for most of us, with the use of a new product. Only you'll need to cook the potatoes in the oven...

אם יש צבע אחד שאני באמת אוהבת (ואני מתכוונת לאוהבת ממש, על גבול האובססיה) הוא אקווה.

למי מכם שלא מתעסקים בשמות מתוחכמים של צבעים ביום יום, אני אסביר שאקווה הוא מעין טורקיז בהיר, והצבע שיושב בדיוק על התפר בין תכלת לירקרק מנטה. משמעות המילה "אקווה" היא מים ואני חושבת שאין בטבע דבר שמתאר את הצבע יותר טוב מאשר חוף טרופי עם חול לבן ומים צלולים ובהירים בגוון טורקיז ירקרק בהיר, או אם תרצו - אקווה.

If there's one color which I really love (and I mean REALLY love) it's for sure aqua.

For those of you who don't deal with sophisticated color names on a daily basis, I'll explain that aqua is a very light turquoise and the color that is right in the middle between mint green and light blue. The meaning of the word aqua is "water" and I feel that nothing describes this color better than a tropical beach with white sand and clear light greenish turquoise water, or aqua if you will.

אני אוהבת את הצבע הזה כבר שנים, אוהבת ללבוש אותו, לצבוע בו את כל מה שסביבי ופשוט להסתכל עליו. הוא רענן, הוא נעים ובאמת שאין עוד צבע אחר שמשתלב כמוהו בצורה כל כך מושלמת עם כל צבע אחר.

I've been loving this color for ages. I love wearing it, painting everything around me in it and even just looking at it. It's fresh, it's pleasant and there is truly no other color besides aqua that just goes along so well with any other shade.

בן הזוג שלי כבר יודע שכל פריט בצבע הזה הוא מתנה אידאלית עבורי ובסטודיו שלי המילה "אקווה" הפכה לכל כך שגורה עד כדי כך שכבר הומצאו ביטויים מטופשים כמו "שיהיה לך יום אקווה".

My boyfriend already knows that any aqua-colored item is a perfect gift for me and in my studio "aqua" is mentioned so frequently that even sayings like "have an aqua day" have been invented.

Painting furniture in aqua gives them a fresh dainty look.

זהו שולחן מכונת תפירה ישן שקניתי בשוק הפשפשים וששופץ ונצבע על ידי אמא שלי, באקווה כמובן.

This is an old sewing machine table I bought in the flea market and was painted by my mom, in aqua of course.

וזהו רהיט התצוגה הראשי בחנות שלי בנוה צדק, שגם כן שופץ ונצבע.

This is the main display cabinet in one of my shops, also renovated and painted.

גם על השידה והספסל בחנות בדיזנגוף לא פסח הצבע אקווה!

This dresser and bench also did not manage to get away from being painted aqua!

וזה כנראה רק עניין של זמן עד שתהיה לי חנות שהחזית שלה תצבע בצבע המקסים הזה. כזאת בדיוק אני רוצה!

It's only a matter of time until I have an aqua shop front. I want one just like this!

את השעון הזה קניתי בערך 30 שניות אחרי שראיתי אותו לראשונה.

I bought this watch about 30 seconds after I first saw it.

ובכל מקרה, גם אם הופעה שלמה באקווה באקווה זה יותר מידי בשבילכם, תמיד אפשר להסתפק בתכשיט עם גוון אקווה שיעשה את העבודה. בעיני, אין שילוב טוב יותר מאקווה וזהב.

Anyway, if a total look in aqua is too much for you, it's always an  an option to stick to a piece of jewelry with an aqua shade. To me, there is no better combination than aqua and gold.
